Goals Not Resolutions

nothing like the fresh start to a new year that makes me want to throw out everything and start over. realistically speaking that isn't possible. but there is nothing like the promise of new possibilities, uncharted territory waiting for me to discover it, a better you (me). every year i flock to my obscene amounts of stationary and select a pad on which to write my resolutions on (that alone is a task people). i carry them around with me everywhere i go in my planner so that if i need a little reminder of what they were they are right on hand.

this year though i want to really reevaluate the way that i look at them. i always get a sense of disappointment when i don't complete them and that is not what resolutions are all about. they are set points that you have predetermined for yourself to meet. they should bring you enjoyment and satisfaction not impending gloom and doom. i want to view them as goals, as a journey i have set forth on and these will be little (or big) stops in between.

i am sure as the year goes on, i will add to my list of goals but i wanted to predefine where i am headed. i wish you all the very best in this new year and much success in your goals or resolutions. i also want to thank each and every one of you who has stopped by this blog. pretty much all of you are silent readers but you took a moment of your time and shared it with me and that is invaluable.

Tarte Bon Voyage Collector's Set

while i was doing my makeup the other day, i noticed that pretty much all my eye shadows were nudes, nudes, and more nudes. and while this is my all time favorite look, it was a bit difficult to do a smokey eye with all ten shades of a soft brown. i wanted to add in a pallet that while yes had more nudes also had some rich, deep, and moody colors. enter Tarte's Bon Voyage. this set comes with a makeup bag, a gloss, a lip tint, a mini mascara, setting powder, maracuja oil, and a cheek stain. it makes the perfect addition to this winter season. the eye shadows are highly pigmented and so smooth and velvety. there is no fall out or fading. all the colors blend richly into each other. i am eager to try out all the other little goodies that come with this set as well! and can we talk about the beautiful gold and lavender makeup bag? swoon!

~Our Wedding~

on November 22, 2014 i married a wonderful man and committed my life to his. to making our house a home. to loving these two boys like they are mine. here are a few shots of the details of our special day.

~my mothers and my sister hand over mine. three generations of strong women~
~a little treat spread complete with some Mexican candy and Mexican wedding cookies~
~what husband told me once when i wondered why we didn't meet years before~
~Star Wars cake toppers and the most delectable cake you can imagine~
~Modcloth dress~
~ballet flats perfect for my hurt toe~
eager to start planning out church wedding in 2016!

if you live in the San Antonio, TX area, I highly recommend Bird Bakery for all your sweet needs. It is a small shop owned by the lovely Elizabeth Chambers, wife to Armie Hammer, and run by the nicest staff you will find. the store itself is darling. it is like eye candy walking in there. so many cute details and little trinkets you can purchase for the home as well. but lets focus on their treats people. one of a kind. you will not be disappointed. they have so many unique flavors as well as traditional of course and gluten free choices as well. they were my one and only choice for our wedding cake.

Snowflake Nails

as i was decorating our Christmas tree while my mom, dad, and husband sat and watched me i had a thought, "man my nails look rough!" deep, i know. having not visited a nail salon since they hurt my toe, which as we know led to surgery, i guess i have just let myself go. i do try and keep up but priorities (Netflix) and life get in the way. i have this cute snowflake ornament that one of my coworkers son gave me and i was inspired to create these snowflake nails.

first i applied my tried and true Orly Bonder Rubberized Base Coat. can't live without this stuff! then i applied two coats of Revlon ColorStay Gel Envy Nail Enamel in All or Nothing. the formula of this product is amazing guys! the polish lasts forever and goes on evenly. for glitter i had a bottle from the Forever 21 collection line but any glitter polish will do. i only did one coat and with a light hand. i wanted it to appear sparingly like the glitter had floated from above and landed on my nails. you want to ensure the creamy color of the Revlon polish shows through. finally i sealed the deal with a coat of Revlon ColorStay Dimond Top Coat. i really loved the way they turned out and a great alternative to my daily holiday red polish.

Christmas Decorations and DIY

last year on the day after Christmas, husband and i woke up early and hit all the shops for the day after Christmas sales. by mid morning we were done and felt pretty confidant that the following Christmas our decor would be awesome.

it is now that Christmas and when we pulled out our loot it was like Christmas morning having already forgotten what we had purchased. still there were a few DIY crafts that i couldn't part with so i kept them and i am glad i did. it makes the house look lived in. more homey. like we have a story to tell.

after the great escape, one of my co-workers gave me a Christmas tree because she said i deserved to have a holiday after the year i had gone through. money was an issue so i hit up my trusted and true Dollar Tree and bought my ornaments. i instantly fell in love with these gold glitter reindeer (um who wouldn't?). i bought two packs of them and streamed them along some gold craft ribbon. at my old apartment they glistened spectacularly  from the light coming in through the giant window that it adorned. here, they help cover the eyesore that is this baby mauvey pink wall with the patches on it (the house is under construction people and eventually it will get done). honestly, i don't ever want to get rid of it and plan to give it a home at our house FOR. EV. ER.

i picked up this garland for $3 at Target Dollar Spot (the answer to slightly fancier dollar deals) and had a ball untangling it with my mom. once i showed it who was boss (my mom, not me) i layed it flat on our table and just inserted some tiny sphere ornaments along the route. i placed these tiny houses on here as well. they just look so cute peeking out through the garland and the windows actually light up. of course no dinner table would be complete without some cut crystal and perfectly trimmed candles. the "cut crystal" and the candles are from the dollar store.

finally if you remember my haunted houses DIY, take the same concept and spray paint them a glossy white until your heart is content. then i took spray glitter (Dollar Tree is the bomb) and did the roof tops and the trees. glitter snow is a real thing.

what is your favorite decor for the holidays? DIY or store perfection?

My Face in Brushes

i rounded up the brushes that i use on an every day basis. they are the brushes that i swear by and get me out the door at an ungodly hour to get to work.

Sigma F86 Tapered Kabuki- i use this brush to blend out my concealer. it blends it out beautifully and removes any excess product. even though it is a rather larger brush for such a small area, the tapered end fits nicely under the eye.

Sigma F80 Flat Top Kabuki- this brush is perfect for blending out liquid foundation. it distributes the foundation evenly and makes your skin appear even and flawless.

Sigma F82 Rounded Kabuki- the perfect brush to blend out mouse like foundations such as Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse. it doesn't steal product from you and just leaves your skin looking airbrushed.

Sigma F84 Angled Kabuki- i actually use this brush to apply highlighter on my cheekbones and the bridge of my nose. because of its rounded and angled shape, the brush tips gather the fine sheen of your highlighter and place it right on top of your skin beautifully. seriously glowing from within never happened so quickly.

e.l.f. Studio Angled Blush Brush- for contouring my cheekbones i pick up this soft and dense brush. works great for defining this area.

MAC Blush Brush 116- because this brush is rather small, it works well to keep my blush where it belongs during application, on my cheeks. i have tried other bigger blush brushes and i will find a way to apply blush all the way to my concealer. not cute.

e.l.f. Studio Stipple Brush- i use this to blend out my bronzer and my blush. no makeup lines here!

here is a fun article by Alight Fashion Blog entitled Brushology: A Guide to Makeup Brushes that you guys may like. it gives a brief description of each brush and what they are made for. happy reading!

when husband first purchased this house about 3 years ago, it really needed some tender loving care. and a sledgehammer. and some paint. and a vacuum. surely you get the picture. but he has worked tirelessly to transform this house into a home. walls have been knocked out, walls have been put in. even the kitchen cabinets were hand made by his father. so much love has gone into this that i thought i would share with you the on-going process.

now that i have moved in i have slowly started to incorporate some elements of decor into the house. for example, we finally have a bedspread (instead of one of those thick blankets with a giant rose on it). needless to say, this will be a process as rooms still need to be redone and walls still need to be painted. i thought that i would share with you the little things and the big things that will go into making a #housetohome. So follow along on Instagram and Twitter @lifeinmascara.

i found these great bottles and faux succulent planter at Michaels. all their fall seasonal items were on clearance for 80% off. the bottles came out to $1.80 and the planter was $4.00. now let's talk about the planter. i love me some succulents. i dislike intensely (we don't use the word hate in our house so the boys don't pick it up) fake plants. but this planter, oh this planter!!! game changer guys. i had to touch it to make sure it was fake. it was so life like i had to get it. i thought it would make a great addition to the house.

we have no real decor going on right now but i thought these little things were a great way to start. i will share more of the process as projects get made. stay tuned to #housetohome.

Call Me

let's face it. we are all pretty much surgically attached to our phones, and i am no exception. my current phone is on its last leg, which is a galaxy S3, which may as well be a dinosaur. i really do not like shopping for a new cell phone. it is equivalent to the pain of shopping for a new bra or new glasses (that too is coming up). so the life long question begins: apple or android? galaxy or iPhone? i have never had an iPhone and have always been somewhat reluctant to join the cult following behind it. but i can't help but wonder, is it really better? if i am going to spend money on purchasing a new phone, i want to get something that is worth it. so let me know your opinion on this guys. i really need some feedback on both phones. comment below or tweet me @lifeinmascara.

Birchbox for Men

husband (wow that was a change) washes his face with his body wash. notice i said body wash and not body soap and trust me that took forever to get him to change. i have tried so very hard to get him to use actual face products on that handsome face that i adore but nothing seems to really stick. he just forgets. i kept thinking maybe if he became excited about his skincare then he would remember to use it. but there is no excitement in it for him.

ok, i thought. maybe if i get him some for Christmas he can slowly start to incorporate it into his routine. i started researching things and a side advertisement popped up for Birchbox for Men. first of all, i had no idea that they even made these beauty boxes for men. i thought it was just for women. i instantly got excited for it and thought who doesn't like to get packages in the mail? once i really started to look into it, i saw that he would not only get beauty products but other fun things like socks and earphones as well. they are obviously all different but still! i really wanted to get some personal feedback on it and reached out to my male friends to see if anyone had used it. here is what one of my besties had to say:

"I initially learned about Birchbox from one of my girlfriends who had this tiny package delivered to her apartment each month. The parcel consisted of a small box filled with awesome samples of skincare products, makeup and perfume.

Intrigued by the monthly surprise, I inquired if there was a male version available; and to my amazement, there was!

Upon signing up, you have the option to fill out a brief questionnaire to gauge your interests. Based on your responses, Birchbox will tailor a box for you.

I tend to think of myself as a trendy (yet nerdy), on-the-go, kinda guy; so my box is usually filled with awesome new products that I absolutely love!

Men receive four sample-sized items and one full-sized item.

Some of the items I’ve received include new socks, an iPhone charger, whiskey stones, t-shirts, boxer briefs, a candle and a variety of great samples of cologne, shampoo, skincare products and more!

Cost: $20 a month for the men’s box, $10 for women’s box.

Why the cost difference? Men get an awesome full-sized item each month. Sorry ladies!"

so with that in mind, i think this would make an excellent gift not just for the man in your life, but for your brother, father, or male bestie too. you can actually gift it to someone during the holidays as well. i think i might just give it a go...and maybe get one for me too? happy shopping!

*guys this is not a sponsored post. this is all my opinion and that of my friend. we received nothing from Birchbox. they do not know i even exist. i am not that cool.

Running a Half Marathon

this weekend i had the great experience of participating in another half marathon by Rock n Roll Marathon Series. i believe this is my 9th half marathon. honestly i have lost track. i have been running for about 3 years now but have only been participating in runs for 2 years. i started out by just walking around my neighborhood and adding a block to my routine after so many days. it was hard at first but walking at a fast pace really built up my endurance and till this day i can walk for hours without stopping.

the course took us all throughout downtown San Antonio which is beautiful. i haven't fully healed from my toe surgery so i couldn't really run. i was able to jog for a bit here and there and it felt wonderful to feel my body pick up where it left off. i didn't realize how much i missed it.

my runs normally go like this:
3 miles- fat sausage fingers appear
6 miles- getting pretty hungry
10 miles- things start getting a bit hairy. i get hangry and slightly violent.
11 miles- the anger has subsided. i am almost done.
12 miles- the longest mile of my life. may as well be its own 5k.
13.1 finish line- exhausted and crying and screeching 'can't wait to do this again!' as my running partner bestie and i hug.

i clearly don't take myself or my running seriously. i don't run to win. i run because i can and one day i won't be able to. i am blessed to have a great friend who is willing and crazy enough to do any run with me. she is petite and i clearly am not and we run at the same pace. after all, slow and steady wins the race. it is such a humbling experience to see runners pass you up in wheelchairs, full leg prosthetic's, or 'i survived cancer' shirts. they should pass me up. the road is theirs. my favorite is when little kids rush by me. God speed little one!

finishing a half marathon is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. i highly recommend any one to do it. men or woman. run or walk. who cares? at least you are out there doing it. trust me, you will never be the same after you complete one.

Merry Techmas Gift Guide

special treat coming at you guys today. guest blogger Francisco Platt from INFO INNOVAMODE:

We are only 20 days away from Christmas!  Are you ready? Because if not, you still have time to shop, add to your wish list...and go tech.  Here are four holiday gift ideas that INFO INNOVAMODE recommends.

1. (TECH)
Microsoft enters the wearable tech community with the Band.  The Microsoft Band is a thin black bracelet with multiple functions and ten built-in sensors.  For example, it has a built-in GPS system, a personal fitness tracker and it monitors the duration and quality of your sleep.  The Band also has popular notification alerts regarding emails, calendar, weather and incoming calls. It retails for $199 and is available online and at Microsoft stores.
Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo refers to their products as “Lifewear. Clothes for a better life for everyone, every day.”  A regular in using innovate textiles, this season Uniqlo reissues their HEATTECH line with a new collection for men and women.   These staple items are able to retain body warmth and neutralize odor from perspiration.  The women’s line has an added bonus by having camellia oil woven into the fabric  to enhance softness against the skin.  The collection consists of basics such as long sleeve crew necks and tights and come in a variety of colors.  HEATTECH is priced competitively (i.e. $12.90 for a v-neck t-shirt) and is available for purchase either in store or online.

American menswear designer, Michael Bastian, and Hewlett-Packard have taken a classic timepiece and updated it for today’s techno savvy market.  The MB Chronowing vibrates for incoming emails, text messages and other notifications connected to your favorite apps. The watch is controlled by three separate buttons as opposed to a touchscreen.  It is water-resistant and made out of stainless steel with a battery run of 7 days between charging.  MB Chronowing retails for $350 on and you can pick the color and material of its straps (black rubber, olive green nylon or brown leather).  A limited luxe tech edition (sapphire crystal with alligator straps) is priced at $650 with only 300 available.

And last but not least:
Can designer headphones enRICH the music you listen to? That could easily be the case if what you are sporting is a pair of headphones by megabrand Chanel.  This year the French authority on luxury collaborated with California-based Monster Inc. to produce headphones like no other. Your $5,000 purchase at a Chanel boutique consists of a black quilted pair of headphones with an accompanying case…both with the double C monogram, natch.  The clout of a great luxury brand embracing technology is a sure sign that a seismic shift in fashion is on the horizon.
