Life in Mascara: 2015

Thursday, December 31, 2015

Here we go! A new year. I really like this time of year. I get to look back at all the blessings of the previous year and still look forward at the brink of what is to come. Almost like time stands still for just one day. One day that holds momentous promise.

It has been a great year for Life in Mascara. In just over a year of blogging, I was published in an online magazine, I created a YouTube channel, and our following has continued to grow. I am so thankful to each and every one of you for taking the time to visit this space, this community that we have become. I wish you all the best in this upcoming year.  Much love and blessings your way!

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

I had a great time filling out my New Year's week. I never thought this would be a planner I would enjoy so much. It has opened my mind and my heart to creativity and I am embracing that. I even bought the fitness one to be able to track my year of training leading to San Francisco 2017. Eekk!!! These were all a mix of shops so I will do my best to tag them on my Instagram @lifeinmascara.

Oh! And since I was away for a bit, I though I would show you the previous two weeks. Christmas came and went with a bang, didn't it?

All Things New Years Eve

Who else has Auld Lang Syne playing non stop in their heads? I actually like New Year's. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to look back at the year and count my blessings. I am not one to party like it was 1999 on this day though (or ever for that matter) but I do like to have some fun things planned. Stumped on what to do? Let's see what we can come up with:

1. The Food: Crock pot is the way to go for me. I don't want to be messing with the food and not be able to enjoy the festivities. If you are having people over, why not set it and forget it. This year I will have this simmering in my crock pot. I can't wait!

2. To Watch: Netflix and chill. Why not binge watch that series you have been dying to catch up on? Or if a more traditional movie is more up your ally, then how about New Year's Eve (2011) or Love Actually?

3. To Listen: Instead of watching a movie, why not listen to the new season of Serial? Who's addicted already?

4. To Do: Break out your favorite board game (mine is Rummikub) and get your competitive vibes going. Creativity more your style? Then how about these adult coloring books? Been dying to give the Harry Potter one a go.

5. To Read: And if a more quiet night is what you prefer, then why not join our book club and get a leg up on reading our first book? Get it here

Whatever your plans are for this New Year's Eve, I pray that you are happy and safe. I wish all of you a blessed New Year and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this community. Much love and blessings your way!

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

Why are the weeks getting away from me? My to do list dribbles over onto multiple pages and all I want to do is lay on the floor, breathing. I am fussy and tired. The days are gloomy and lead to bad pictures (see image above) which frustrates me even more. I have only 6 more days left before going on Christmas break and I can tell you right now it can't come soon enough! Rant over. On to where I tell you where you can get the cute stickers.

Oh So Fawn: bulbs, holly garland, chocolate covered strawberry, stockings, reindeer head with ornaments, holiday mugs, tiny Christmas tree and Santa hat.

Pookie Bear Cuties: mixer, take out box, dentist.

The Planner Junkie: page flag, blue flag with pencil.

Planner Bowtique: burger and fries.

Heidi Swapp Christmas ephemera kit.

2016 Book Club Announcement

I am BEYOND excited to share with you the start of Life in Mascara Book Club! Reading is something I am very passionate about and for years I have longed to belong to a group where we could all read together and discuss. For one reason or another, that never happened.

When I started my blog, I began to share over the course of this year the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge I decided to do. More and more I began to get excited about reading and sharing my thoughts with this community. Finally one day I though 'We are our own book club'. Search no more!

I also want to share with you why I choose these particular books. As I have shared many times with you, I am working towards incorporating more positivity in my life. I want to be more productive, open hearted, and purposeful in what I do. In going over in my mind what my word for next year will be (this year was 'Present') the word 'Do' popped into my mind. I took it as a sign towards wanting to do more things that fill my heart and my mind. With that I decided that the books we would read would be along these lines and so I went in search of that.

The image above is set to the books we will read from left to right. I have sized them up for you according to MAMBI The Happy Planner boxes and can be downloaded here. Each month we will read the book of the month and then we can discuss it on the last Friday of the month on my YouTube channel

I hope you are as excited as I am to start on this journey. Let me know what you guys think! Oh, and here are the links to the books in case you want to place one order.

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

Who wants to hear a fun story? I was eating dinner on Tuesday night. It was amazing for all those who are food lovers by the way. My parents are in town and my Mami cooked for me. When I was finished, I felt something stuck in my molar. I used floss and a toothpick and I felt something move. Out came half of my wisdom tooth. I mean how!!! I immediately called my dentist and schedule to go in the next morning. Long story short, I am one molar less. I am so thankful that even though the removal process was a bit painful, it was more my nerves that made me cry and not the pain. But my dentist is so sweet she cooed at me like if I was a baby, covered me with a blankie, and fixed my hair. I appreciated that.

Anyways the point to my story is that I wanted to get a video up today but for obvious reasons, I was unable to film (or pronounce anything without adding multiple 's' to it) for a couple of days. I thought I would still share my spread in my Happy Planner even though it is the end of the week. Did you catch my last planner video? You can watch it here. Do you like my paperclips? Let me show you how to make them here

Cookie plate and mug, Christmas light bulb, Reindeer head from Oh So Fawn

Some Recent Makeup Bits

I thought I would share with you some recent makeup purchases both from the drugstore and Sephora. I haven't tried them all out yet so I can't give you a full review but aren't they just lovely to look at?

Having a recent lipstick moment and I bought two new reds (because they are seriously all different), Maybelline Rich Ruby and Siren in Scarlet. I also bought this deep plum, Rimmel 03. I just love the dramatic effect of this. And to go on the other side of the spectrum I went for another one of Marc Jacob's Nude Sheer Gel in Role Play. If you haven't had a look at this range of lipsticks, you really need to. There is a nude for everyone and the formula is so rich and creamy. A true delight!

For the eyes I wanted a dark smokey look but wanted to steer clear of my normal browns and golds. So I went for THIS deep forest green. All the colors I have tried in this range are very blendable and long lasting. The tiny bits of glitter in it aren't over powering and capture the light. Plus its the holidays. I say pound on the glitter!

I also ran out of my Anastasia Eyebrow Wiz in Ebony. My eyebrows are black and I do not understand why they seem to be the only brand who does black eyebrow pencils. I went for the only drugstore option that also makes black eyebrow pencils and powders, NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder. I did give this a go and it matches my color perfectly. It is such a great and affordable alternative. Plus it comes in this dinky package with a equally dinky brush and eyebrow spooley which are really good.

The show stopper was Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation. I had been wanting to try it for so long and just never did. Why did I let so much time pass? The love affair is in full effect. It is such a light coverage but can be built up to a great medium coverage. I go in with one pump for my full face then go back in with a tiny blob to cover the redness in my cheeks. Then I oohh and aawww at my luminous skin. Because let me tell you, it makes your skin glow in a non sticky way. I then set my concealer, nose, and chin with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light and then blend in a bit of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone to my cheeckbones and I spend another few seconds admiring my skin. It's not vain to think you look FLAWLESS!!! Dare I say I finally found my luminous skin routine?

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Wishlist

Whose ready for some shopping? More like self shopping? While this is normally the time that we start buying gifts for others, it is normally the time that I buy gifts for myself. I like to wait for Black Friday and Cyber Monday to take a look at things that I have been wanting to see if by any chance they are on sale and then I go for it!

I should preface this post by stating that I do not know if ANY of these items will be part of the holiday sales, but they are the items that I will be looking for. Having worked retail for many years, I do know that retailers tend to do a generous discount on a lot of tech gear so this year I will be focusing a BIG part on that.

1. Absolutely Fabulous: Absolutely All Of It- Normally stores like to discount a lot of their season sets during this time. I have been lusting for this particular one for years.

2. Make Up Geek Blush Palette and Foiled Eyeshadow Pallet- Cyber Monday is a perfect time to purchase makeup that is sold exclusively or primarily online.

3. Rayovac AA Batteries- Last year husband bought us a years supply of batteries during Black Friday. This year we may need to triple that order because my DSL camera uses batteries (why?) and filming drains them. And if you have littles, you probably need a box of these and AAA as well.

4. Apple iMac Desktop- Remember when having a laptop was all the rage and desktops were uncool? Screw that. I can't see. I need a giant screen (or two) in front of me. And this is a dream!

5. USB Memory Card Reader- I can't even tell you the amount of times I wished I had one of these little gadgets. Basically, life would be better if I owned one.

6. Bose SoundTrue Headphones- Previous to recent YouTube channel creation, I would have said I personally didn't need these. But now whilst editing, I can see how they can help.

7. Kate Spade Portable Charger- While filming this video, I realized how much this would come in handy.

8. SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Card- Currently, I am only able to film 2 videos on my SD card before it gets full. This limits me to only being able to film once during the weekends which is when I devote most of my time to creating videos. This will allow me to be more productive.

9. Hallmark "Here Comes the Pumpkin King" Keepsake Ornament- In case I haven't made my love for all things Jack Skelington, this ornament would make a great addition to our tree.

What will you be going after this year? And remember, shopping is cardio. Yes, even online. You worked that index finger to death clicking away! Go ahead and eat that pizza. You deserve it!

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

Of all the Fall weeks I thought surely my Thanksgiving spread was going to be the warmest, full of pumpkins and turkeys. I had 1 pumpkin left and absolutely no turkeys. O.k. then. We work with what we have.

Starbucks Holiday Collection

Let me start by saying that if you are one of the people that were offended by Starbucks' holiday red cup then this post may not be for you.

This is actually one of the collections I look forward to every year. Year round I battle (not really) my addiction to Starbucks drinkware often (all the time) caving in to one (many) of them. This years collection we see a lot of illustrations and gold detailing to them. And I am just in loooove.

Here is just a handful of my favorites from this year's collection:

3. Abstract Dot Mug $13.95

Which one will be for you?

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

Stickers seem to be put on the back burner because yet again I can't stop using these fun cut outs! Could this be the end of stickers as we know it? Um no. As soon as I started filling this out I pulled out a bunch of my life planner stickers and started sticking away.

Anyways, this week is really special since on the 22nd husband and I will be married for 1 year. I can't even believe time has gone by that fast. Even after all the stickers happened, I left a lot of blank space so I can go back afterwards and put some pictures. I also inserted this fun 'I Heart My Family' journaling tab from SMASH. The rest of these cut outs are from packets I found at Marshalls and TJ Max.

Do you like my paperclip? Here is my video on how to make them.

Friday, November 13, 2015

I thought I would share with you guys how to DIY some fun paperclips. They are easy to make and you probably already have most of the supplies. Happy crafting!

The Importance of Disconnecting

The amount of tech items that I attach myself to daily is embarrassing. I mean do we even know how to function without some kind of internet connection? You undoubtedly have felt the instant panic when you realize your cell phone is missing from the palm of your hand only to feel the instant relief when you feel it nestled into your back pocket. It's sad, isn't it? How much we rely on these gadgets? I am just as bad, obviously, and I never really gave it a second thought until I saw just how addicting it was becoming.

Granted I spend a lot of time online because of my job (and this blog) but it was my time 'spent' with others that I am talking about. Conversations were being held and I was just 'uhuhing' and kept on scrolling through my feed. Whether that person seemed to mind or not I do not know. They may not have even noticed because they are guilty of it themselves. But I didn't like the anxiety that was building inside of me when I would see that I had missed the 'flash sale' because I wasn't online at the time or the 'I didn't know that happened' moments. Worse even is spending an evening at home and the next day thinking 'Did I even see my husband?'.

I began making a conscious effort to put my phone aside as much as I could. It was almost painful at first to not leap at the ding. "Now what do I do?" I thought. Hold a conversation. What a concept, right?

For my mental clarity, I try to be alone with my thoughts at least once a day. It is the time where I plot and plan and scheme and destroy my mental obstacles. I pray, I laugh at old memories, and sometimes I even cry. I need that time to just be me with me and be ready to be me with others. It allows me to sort my thoughts to further share them with others. Honestly, it helps my peace and I believe it opens me up to others as well. I want to open heatedly reach out to my loved ones and make connections and memories and even take selfies. But I want that phone to go straight back into my back pocket and not come out. I have even started to silence it in the evenings and check it in passing. No event is more important than the time spent with my loves and I want to give them all of my attention.

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

My love affair with ephemera continues. I am loving playing them out before I go in with stickers and washi tape. Funny enough, I didn't use any washi. I think this is the first time that happens.

To add in some patterns I used some card stock and cut them to fit the MAMBI boxes. I then added some stickers or more ephemera to add dimension to it. I thought I would show you with out my writing on it so you can actually see the design better. What do you prefer?

Do you like my seasonal paperclips? Make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel for a video coming up this Friday on how to do them.

Reading Challenge Update #8

Oh how much I have enjoyed reading this month. Here is where I am currently at on the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge:

1. Eat. Pray. Love. by Elizabeth Gilbert. This book fulfills 'A Memoir' for me. I will say I was not in the least interested in reading the book or watching the movie years ago when it came out. Now after doing both, I can say that I really needed to be in the mindset that I am in now to actually appreciate the message. I can identify with the characters loss of self and her journey towards finding oneself. I can't say I know exactly who I am, but I do have a clearer vision of who I want to be. I would say this is a good book for someone to read late 20s and so on.

2. Orange Is The New Black by Piper Kerman. This book fulfills 'A Book With A Color In The Title'. This was a fun read. And much, much tamer than the show. I can say that I expected that but no really, the book is rated G compared to the show. Pick this up for some casual reading. It really puts a perspective on how convoluted the penal system can be.

3. Not That Kind Of Girl by Lena Dunham. This fulfills 'A book based on or turned into a T.V. show' simply because the show Girls is based on Dunham's real life experiences. Not all of it, of course, but some. This book had a lot of hype around it and although I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away. Dunham talks about her childhood phobias and takes us all the way through present day. We see all her painful love experiences, her ailments, her personal views. Again, pick this up as a fun read.

4. Yes, Please by Amy Poehler. This fulfills 'A Popular Author's First Book'. Hilarious. Downright hilarious. Just read it.

5 Things To Do On Halloween

No kids? No problem! Halloween is my favorite holiday and I like to always do something to celebrate this day. As it is marketed towards children, I feel like sometimes adults grow out of it too quickly. But if you are in the spirit to spook, then these ideas are for you:

1. Binge watch any of these movies: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, The Addams Family, Hocus Pocus, Edward Scissorhands, and The Craft.

2. Eat candy: Why not invest in your favorite treat this day? These are my favorite. Bonus points on the cute box it comes in for the season. Now these are for you so go all out! You can give out something else, which leads me to my next point...

3. Give out candy: I don't fear the 'trick' if I don't give out candy. But the thing I looked forward too the most when I bought my house was giving out candy on Halloween. I just love seeing all those kids dressed in adorable costumes high on candy and natural excitement. So pull out a chair, get a giant bowl of candy ready, and...

4. Dress up: No, you are not too old for this. You are never to old for this. It will add to the excitement of the day. Plus kids love seeing you all dressed up as you fill up their baggies.

5. Listen to an original broadcast of War of the Worlds: As your night winds down, curl up with your favorite blanket and listen to an original broadcast of Orson Welles War of the Worlds. I love that when it first broadcasted, many listeners believed this was actually happening. It wouldn't happen in today's society, but just put yourself in that frame of mind. Sip on some hot cocoa whilst listening and the mood is set!

Plan With Me In The Happy Planner

Using the last of this ephemera packet I decorated this week. Went a bit heavy again but don't have much plans. Halloween is my favorite holiday of ALL TIMES! This year it will just be husband and I and I have some things planned for us. More on that tomorrow so make sure to come back for that.

Been toying with the idea of transforming this planner into more of a memory planner. If you are using your MAMBI for that, please let me know. I would love to hear your ideas.

Plan With Me in The Happy Planner

In honor of this weeks bridal shower at Disneyland, and the fact that the park transforms with Halloween decor including a Haunted Mansion as The Nightmare Before Christmas, I went for a full on Jack Skellington spread. These stickers from Pretty Sheepy are perfect! They are a gloss finish but I did write on some of them and they did not smear. Plus look at that adorable Disney churro and Dole Whip! I can't wait to be eating some of those!

Disney Here I Come!

I was never that girl who dreamed of her wedding. I was the girl who dreamed of her bridal shower. Not in the 'what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas', but in the 'let's do a girls trip to Disneyland!' way.

Disneyland is a family tradition. We hailed to the resort every summer (we live 20 minutes away but the drive is an eternity as an excited person) and spent an amazing day on the rides and eating one too many churros. As adults, my siblings and I do the annual pilgrimage back home in the summer to see our parents. And then we go to a in we have annual passes even though my sister and I live in Texas...don't judge us. This summers trip was extra special to me because it was the first time I took husband. He was a great sport wearing matching shirts (family tradition) and my brother in law finally had someone to ride all the intense rides with.

Now I am returning with my #plannercomadre and my sister to meet the rest of the family at Disneyland for my bridal shower. It is a dream come true at the most magical place on earth. Cue all the Disney songs and stare longingly into the distance. In honor of this trip I had to get a classic Disney manicure and we also ordered these awesome sweatshirts from Him & Gem. Guys, these people are AMAZING to work with. They customized my order and shipped it in a timely manner. Then the postal service lost it and claimed to have delivered it. I emailed them in a panic because our trip was around the corner and they reprinted and shipped them off the next day! Customer service at its finest. Take a look at their amazing selection. You are sure to find something you love.

It's The Little Things

Oh the little things that make me smile! I keep them close. I look around me and look for them when I am feeling particularly bleh. I remind myself that I am blessed. I tell myself to be here and now. This picture includes some very special pieces. My new Kate Spade planner which had been my unicorn (unboxing video coming this Sunday!), these AMAZING paper doll books featuring my style icon Jackie Kennedy made by the equally AMAZING and talented David Wolfe (or as I like to refer to him, MY David), and these wild studs earings from Stella & Dot that husband bought me. Blessed and loved I tell you!

Wipe It Off

I don't normally use wipes on an everyday basis. Mostly I use them when I am traveling but still keep a pack at home for those lazy days when I just can't be bothered to wash my face. Normally, my pack gets old and dries out because I don't reach for them often. I normally just grab a tried and true brand at the store and replace as needed. But lately I have been using and loving a lot of skincare items from Boots from both their organic and sensitive skin line that when I saw their cleansing wipes I decided to give them a go.

I opened this pack going on at least 2 months. I only have a few left and I can tell you that while they have lost a bit of their moisture, they are not dried out at all and still remove my makeup. These wipes have no scent and are medium saturated. The wipe itself is very soft, cloth-like almost. It's pretty thick actually which I like since the makeup and solution doesn't transfer to my hands. It removes all my face makeup with one wipe. It even does a good job at removing my mascara but since I do wear a lot of it, I might have to go in with a second wipe to get that all off.

I have not noticed any breakouts or skin irritation from these wipes and I feel like anyone, especially us gals with super sensitive skin, can get on with these wipes. They are truly so mild and still get the job done. Get to wiping!
